As a professional plant ecologist I get to spend a lot of time looking and thinking about the natural world and am endlessly fascinated by the beauty and interconnectedness of life. I hope to bring a small element of that to my work in the sense of having an authentic or organic feel to the pots.

I have been a student of the art of ceramics for over 20 years. My first experience with clay was in a public school in Eugene, Oregon, when I was amazed by the tactile experience of moving wet clay in a circle. My craft and technique was greatly expanded after working in the studio at Lane Community College while working as an employee there. The world of wood and salt firing with some amazing potters in the Willamette Valley opened my eyes. The Hui No’eau studio in Makawao, Hawaii was a wonderful place to continue to explore clay shapes in a beautiful setting. After many years of traveling for work I am growing roots in Astoria and the North Coast.
I hope to pay respect to the history and tradition of thousands of years of craft through the making of quality pieces that are functional and beautiful. I try to make each piece a learning experience, focus on the craft, and stay simple in the execution.

The many great artists that I have been able to work and learn from in the Pacific Northwest influence my work. I enjoy the influence of Japanese esthetic on western art pottery as well as the arts and crafts movement here in the United States.
I am interested in atmospheric, wood firings and alternative firing techniques and how they interact with and influence the work.
As a member of the greater circles of community I want my work to build connections with and serve the functional and aesthetic interests of the community. This is in part a sense of place that informs the style of work and reflects the local environment of the North coast of Oregon.

Located in Astoria Oregon, Alderbrook is a small community on the east end of the city with a long history as a working class neighborhood with many artists. As a small studio I rely on a vibrant group of potters in the area to collaborate with and inspire my work.
